Dublin’s New Central Plaza Conversion Uses Denso Protection

The old Central Bank Building in Dame Street, Dublin, is currently being redeveloped and will reopen as the Central Plaza consisting of offices, shops and restaurants. Winn & Coales (Denso) Ltd are supplying corrosion prevention coatings for major structural sections and also an outer wrap prior to fire protection.

The building was originally constructed in the 1970’s and the design was based on suspending each floor from two large concrete cores. Each floor level was then constructed at ground level and hoisted into place and then supported by Macalloy tension bars.

DBFL Consulting Engineers in discussion with Winn & Coales decided to remove the existing wrap and apply Denso Tape to 2500m of 40mm Macalloy bars, thus providing long term corrosion prevention. Denso PVC Self-Adhesive Tape was then used as an outer wrap before fire protection and cladding was applied.

Denso Paste & 80mm Denso Tape Control Brunel Bridge Corrosion

Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s Swing Bridge was constructed of riveted wrought iron plates in 1849 to provide a crossing over the entrance lock for growing vehicular activity in Bristol Docks. It is a rare survivor of Brunel’s Bristol work and predates the Clifton Suspension Bridge.

To hold back corrosion in the early days, linseed oil and resin based paint coatings were regularly applied, but after 50 years of neglect the Grade 2 Listed structure has rusted seriously.

In the Bridge’s 170th year the volunteers of the Avon Industrial Buildings Trust have turned to Winn & Coales (Denso) Ltd for a well-tried protective system to help preserve important parts for the future.

The structure weighs almost 70 tonnes and is supported by a turntable ring running on just four wheels.

Denso Paste has been applied to the underside of the ancient bridge’s 4m diameter forged iron ring to seal against water entering the deep rust-pits. Then the 3mm thick soft aluminium packers were wrapped with 80mm Denso Tape, bedded on to the new 20mm thick steel ring. This was then jacked up to bed on the underside of the old, heavily-corroded ring to provide a new track for the bridge to run on.

Geoff Wallis, the Avon Industrial Building Trust’s project manager, said: ‘We chose Denso products because we know of their proven performance, and believed they will serve the Bridge well for years to come.’

Densostrip Seals Hinkley North Berth Surfaces

Construction is well underway by Costain on the North Berth project that will serve the forthcoming construction of the Hinkley nuclear power station. Precast concrete units are being applied to the surfaces of the North Berth. As can be seen in the photo, within the black circles, Winn & Coales Densostrip is used to permanently seal the concrete units following application of a special primer.

Densostrip is a compound rubber and bitumen joint sealing strip specifically for precast concrete units to provide a permanently flexible watertight seal when compressed between joint faces previously primed with Densostrip primer. As well as water and sea water it is resistant to chemical and biological attack.

It is also an effective seal for precast concrete box culverts, manholes, inspection chambers, shafts, tunnels and pipe sections.

Aberdeen Marine Choose Seashield 2000FD

When Aberdeen Marine Ltd were awarded the contract to protect six piles on the Eriskay Causeway Bridge in the Western Isles they suggested the use of the Winn & Coales (Denso) Ltd SeaShield 2000FD System as an alternative to the original specified system.

They submitted details of the technical merits of the SeaShield 2000FD system and the benefits in using this tried and tested system to the Western Isles Council, who agreed to the change in the specification.

Despite the challenges of the remote location and inclement weather conditions, Aberdeen Marine Ltd completed the application during the winter months.

Seashield 2000FD is a heavy-duty robust system which provides protection against corrosion on Marine piles. It consists of Denso S105 Paste, Denso Marine Piling Tape and a HDPE Jacket which is applied by pneumatic tensioning equipment and secures with stainless steel bolts.

Densoband Protects Onshore Wind Turbine Foundation

Atlantic Wind Services (MCR) Ltd of Manchester have recently completed the base foundation, infrastructure and other civil works for a new onshore wind turbine at Darrington, Yorkshire.

In order to increase anti-corrosion protection of the wind turbine’s base plinth they have applied Winn & Coales Densoband between the steel tower and the surrounding concrete foundation. In the photo, the black Densoband strip can be seen just above the concrete reinforcement cage.

Densoband is a polymer-modified bitumen strip for sealing joints and preventing the ingress of water. Providing a uniform flexible seal, it is ideal for base and wearing course joints that can withstand thermal changes and movement from traffic load.

Densoband is particularly useful on both concrete-to-asphalt joints and asphalt-to-asphalt road joints. It fully complies with the Highways Agency Specification for Highways Works.

Denso System Used on Irvine Trunk Main

An ageing water main located near Irvine, Ayrshire, was identified by Scottish Water as needing replacement in 2017. The current pipeline, which supplies over 40,000 customers in the region, was to be replaced with a new 12km stretch of polyethylene pipeline. The contractors were Caledonia Water Alliance.

The Winn & Coales Denso P1 Specification System was selected for the protection of various ductile iron fittings on the project as a result of their products meeting the requirements of the CESWI P1 Specification.

The specifications state that a petrolatum paste (Denso Paste) shall act as a primer and cover all areas to be protected. A smooth external profile is then created with the use of a profiling mastic (Denso Profiling Mastic) to cover any projections from the pipework. Finally, the profile is spirally wrapped with a protective tape (Denso Tape) using a 55% overlap.

For extra security on this project, Denso PVC Self-Adhesive Tape was used to seal the system and protect the exposed petrolatum tape from UV or any backfill damage.
